unZined - The Six Thirties

unZined is back continuing to promote local music in the North West. An offshoot of Little Indie Night, a night aimed at hosting what is becoming one of the best live music events in the Northwest, Halton Homegrown has been given free run to find local talent find out a bit more about what makes them tick and spread the word around.

Local bands/artists with serious talent are sprouting fast around the area as we speak and Halton Homegrown's mission to make you aware of them and also encourage others to follow their lead.

A relatively new band from Widnes, indie band The Six Thirties formed 18 months ago and are raring to perform for the masses in the North West. They already have upcoming gigs, one of them at the well renowned Zanzibar in Liverpool. They don't do things by halves and by aiming big and far afield they are sure to be well known in no time.

From listening to their song Annoymous and Midlife Crisis, their sound is plentiful in riffage and up tempo drums. The clean guitar sound is very reminiscent of late 80s - 90s indie rock/pop at its best. The Housemartins spring to mind when listening to them as being a sound-a-like. Midlife Crisis is my fave so far, as it its upbeat and will surely enough get any crowd dancing at their gigs. If they keep up the vibe they have started off with in their future gigs they'll go far.

I posed a few questions to them, and bassist Peter took some time to answer the questions as best as he could, on behalf of the band, to give us an insight as to what makes the band tick. Check out his answers below.

Stoned Love

.... This Friday I am playing some records at The Little Indie Night at The Cellar Bar on City RD in #Chester ... 20 years to the day that I walked into a record shop in Manchester and bought it.

Expect some Stone Roses ? .... Aye !!!

Released on Dec 5th 1994, The Second Coming came five years after that album that requires no introduction whatsoever and is arguably one of the best indie albums of all time.

The Second Coming is the one release though thats missing from my friends mahoosive Stone Roses vinyl collection? ( not that he doesn't like it .. he's seen them play live more than anyone I know, travelling worldwide on the Roses party bus ... he has it on multiple other formats it's just the album took a bit of a back seat ) The whole shabboo surrounding the roses was going around & around & around & around & around for donkeys and still is. We love them though and cant wait for the next release. Anytime soon ?

Five years is a long time in music or anything and especially if your wrapped up in legal battles concerning what you love doing surely stuff around you is going to simmer down a tad and piss the band off ?  I hear things like ... 'It wasn't as good as their first' & 'underrated',  but I for one went out and bought it as soon as I could on release date. Never had it off the record player for yonks. I was working in Manchester that day & its been going round and round ever since .......... 'from the top' ... back to the top ..........

unZined - The Volts

The Volts, as the overused metaphor goes, emerged from the embers of female fronted Fierce Inc like a phoenix and are developing their own sound to suit their new male singer. The new, more blues rock sound, is a far cry from the rock pop which Fierce Inc were known for and some who like the blues rock sound more like me, would say its a step in the right direction instead of sticking to the same sound.

I found their sound is very blues rock orientated from listening to their live video of them performing one of their songs Headwreck. Headwreck is an upbeat classic blues rock song which is so well polished that it could be mistaken for a well played cover. So good in fact I was surprised a virtually new band created it. It shows promise for the band if they create more songs like this.

A few months back I sent out feelers to local bands/artists to see if they'd be up for what I had in mind to promote the local music scene and its bands. One band seemed really up for it and so I noted their name and left it at that. It came to pass that the band, whose name at the time was Fierce Inc, had gone through a transformation and were now called The Volts. Intrigued, I set about looking into the band and putting together an interview to give us and the public a better insight as to what the band is about.

The band helped answer a few questions I put to them recently which you can check out after the jump:

Tune Review - The Juveniles - Please Don't Change

The Juveniles, a band I have recently interviewed as part of my Local Music Showcase, have produced a music video for their song, Please Don't Change:

Its a mellow, melodic song with a light sounding guitar and soft vocals and the music video suits the sound. Again, reminiscent of old school psychadelic indie (Stone Roses, The Charlatans etc) which has made a recent comeback into the music scene. There could be many a deep and insightful meaning to the video, but overall, to me it its about friends chilling in a room playing with guitars, board games and toys, perhaps as a way of showing that its good to be young at heart and that these are the only games they enjoy playing; not the mind games that sometimes come with relationships.

Best Of September ?

Death From Above - The Physical World  -

We don't do massive reviews n' shit

Ten years ago we were spinning the odd tune from their first album ... this their latest probably suits 'best of September'. No easy task, considering Aphex and the multitude of re-releases that have been out lately ( Black Twang for one ), which are also worth checking out if you haven't done so.

Anyway, unless you've been living on the moon for the last 8 weeks, you'l have given this a listen anyway by now.  Full album is down there @ the Spotify link.

Spotify

Spotify has always bugged me ... However theres nothing worse than listening to a playlist on your phone and suddenly the music stops because you are not allowed to listen to it on a 'mobile device' .... so in good old 'keeping up with the Jones's fashion' ... we'l be putting tunes in playlists for you on Spotify whenever possible. As well as youtube etc.

(give us a follow ... not even sure that's what ye meant to do but at least we'l know you ain't far away)

Expect quite a few random playlists erm .... going off, when I've had too many beers.

unZined - The Juveniles

For my second outing to the local music scene, I looked towards band currently gigging around the north west and looking to record some songs at a studio later this month. The Juveniles, Mike Paul Davies on Guitar and Vocals, Liam Devall playing Lead Guitar, Laurel Lau on the Keyboard, Marc Allan Gibbs playing Bass and Fab on Drums produce great music and are well worth looking into more.

From closer inspection of their social sites, their music seems well produced, melodic and full of interesting, well written lyrics. Their sound is hard to describe, as it is so unique, but at a push I can hear some influence from Stone Roses with their songs psychedelic sound, great guitar riffs and steady tempo and Joy Division with their synth and well versed lyrics. Very enjoyable to listen to overall. Links to their music can be found at the bottom of this blog.

Liam and Mike took the time recently to answer an interview I posted to them to find out more about the band. Check the interview after the jump:

Rebellion Festival 2014 Overview

Well, its been a few weeks since I was there and now most of the alcohol is out of my system and I can think properly back on everything I thought it was suitable for me to write a review of what I saw.

My third straight year of being there and to be honest this was probably the lineup I was least looking forward to on paper, however I caught a few surprises and had a year on par with the last two from the Thursday right through to the Sunday. I'll stick a playlist down the bottom of one song by every band listed.

Thursday

On the first day I basically took to looking at what stuff I could buy more than anything at first before catching

  • Goldblade, who were great as usual, thinking back they were technically the first band I saw live supporting Stiff Little Fingers back when I was 11. The energy of the music and the frantic stagemanship of singer John Robb was what was really needed to get things going on a Thursday afternoon.
  • The Selecter - were just as good as they have ever been it seems, with one of the tightest rhythm sections I've ever seen combined with Pauline Murray's unmistakable vocals I had one of the best hour long dancing sessions of the weekend.
  • The Dickies -  I have wanted to see for as long as I remember and I wasn't expecting much to be honest but they managed to blow me away, with Leonard's vocals being just as they were way back in their Banana Splits heyday.

Friday

Friday and Saturday were the most hectic days for me with bands clashing left right and centre meaning I had to miss some that I wanted to see, but that's kinda what happens at festivals right?

As I saw so many I'm gonna have to list all of the bands and say what I thought in detail about a couple:

  • Brain's All Gone - Polish all girl band who had a few decent songs but the mixing wasn't great so it was hard to properly gauge what they were singing
  • The Talks - A good ska-punk sort of thing here, a good dance more than anything
  • The Filaments - Quite a heavy-ish punk band with a brass section, some pretty catchy tunes here and there
  • Fire Exit - Oi band with some great sing along songs, notably the ones about drinking get the best crowd reaction
  •  Men They Couldn't Hang - A friend dragged me along as I really hadn't heard much by them but I really enjoyed it and it was a good contrast to everything else
  • Slaughter and The Dogs (the last half anyway) - Not as good as they once were, but Situations really got the crowd going
  • Stiff Little Fingers - Played basically a greatest hits set with one new track thrown in for good measure, may be a little biased to say of me being the first band I truly loved but they stole the weekend. They managed to get a packed room of a good few thousand punks all singing in unison, I would have personally preferred maybe one or two new songs thrown in but I assume half the crowd wouldn't have known them as the album is literally around a month old as I am writing.
Saturday

Another cramped day so here goes:
  • 3CR - Funny band, don't take themselves too seriously, worth a listen if you're into the more obscene musical humour
  • Choking Susan - Very Stooges-esque female fronted band with some catchy songs, shame their cover of I Wanna Be Your Dog trumped any over their own material
  • 999 - Classic band who never disappoint (Aside from when the singer called me fat the day after, but that's another story)
  • Dirtbox Disco - Second favourite performance of the weekend, a band who will soon be doing their own arena shows guaranteed. They get the crowd into a frenzy like I've never seen, getting kicked in the head by crowd surfers left and right is the sign of a good band, catchy, singalong songs with humour and aggression, personally I prefer them live to their recordings which aren't too great.
  • Peter and The Test Tube Babies - As good as I've ever seen them, on stage but the crowd was pretty dead in all fairness, that's a sign of three days of drinking I suppose.
  • Penetration - Although I only know a few songs by them I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard, granted I was absolutely knackered but I enjoyed them and it was a good setup for the UK Subs straight after.
  • UK Subs - Charlie and co. managed to put on a great set playing all the obvious tracks from their extensive catalogue, and even squeezing in a couple that I never expected (Down on the Farm being an example). They managed to get me going again, singing along to Warhead with the rest of the crowd is always surreal and a highlight of my weekend, not bad for a guy who is 70 now and still constantly touring or recording.
Sunday

A much quieter day as the billing for then wasn't too great (in my personal opinion):
  • Maid of Ace - All female band, some good songs but sound wasn't great in the room.
  • Kunt and The Gang - Always the biggest laugh of the weekend, great for those with a twisted sense of humour.
  • The Dirty Folkers (Vice Squad Acoustic Folk Thing) - A good relax sat on the floor watching Vice Squad do acoustic renditions of their own songs and others - Motorhead's Ace Of Spades coming to mind first.
  • Roy Ellis and The Moonstompers - The Lead singer of Symarip (Skinhead Moonstomp) giving one of the big surprises of the weekend with a great set giving ample opportunity to sing and dance along. A surprise addition was Roddy Radiation from The Specials playing on stage also, doing a good cover of Rat Race before Roy joined the rest of the band.
  • Mad Sin - A psychobilly band from Germany who weren't really to my particular taste however they were basically the last band of the weeknd so I went to see them, fun and upbeat though so a good way to end a great weekend.

unZined : Zen Project

I, along with everyone here at Little Indie Night support the local music scene. At this moment in time, Halton is thriving with fresh indie/rock bands producing quality music.

Along with music recommendations via playlists and home made DJ sets, from this blog on I’ll be doing some local band interviews to introduce new and upcoming bands in the area to see what makes them tick and what makes them stand apart from the crowd.
First to help me start something new is new band Zen Project hailing from Widnes, who are a four piece indie/rock/pop band. When I send them the interview I had in mind, I was expecting them to write back their answers, but instead they sent me a video answering my questions. Thanks guys!

Heres their vid.

Little indie blog from Zen Project on Vimeo

They plan to release three songs at once. They have recently released Revolution and Politics, posted below are both great sounding songs. Both very powerful in their own right, full of great riffage, drums and vocals. Very easy to listen to and even though they say they've been together only for a few months, they sound like they've been together a long while, which comes across for me in the clean guitar riffs as well as their well suited harmonies none of which seem to overpower each other. Check out both of the songs below.

More can be found out about Stuart, Dingo, Andy  David aka Zen Project at the following web places:
