The smell of fresh Kasabian beats is in the air

The smell of fresh Kasabian beats is in the air....

Seems like 2014 is going to be a busy year for Kasabian, there are rumours of them Headlining Glastonbury (although they haven't confimed) and they have already announced they are playing at Moscow's Subbotnik Festival, Benicassim Festival, Orange Warsaw Festival in Poland, Le Rock Dans Tous Ses Etats festival in Evreux France, Ejekt Festival in Athens and Sonic Mania in Japan and that's only the Festivals. As well as all that they are also soon to be releasing their 5th Studio album! (Release date approx June 2014)

When asked about the New Album frontman Tom Meighan said: "This record is as good as it gets for us. If we were on a mountain, we're at the top of Mount Everest now. We've stuck the flag in and we're saluting it. Top of the world, mate - that's where we are."
And if that quote doesn't get you excited I don't know what will.

Having read a recent article in Q Magazine about the album release its become pretty apparent that they are really keeping their cards close to their chest on this one, making the suspense even greater! They did give a few little hints though.
Serge Pizzorno said that Nirvana, Kanye West and Death Grips were all influences on the record, before adding: "I don't want to give it any adjectives. You have to be careful because they stick." He also mentioned a track called 'Bumblebee', which was titled by his 3 year old Son because of the buzzing noise on the track.
Speaking of the sound of 'Bumblebee', Pizzorno said: "It's Beastie Boys dub with a sort of Zeppelin, Rage Against The Machine chorus. It's got the flavour of a bank robbery getaway car. Everything drops to barely nothing and then the fucking hand of God slams the floor.
"It goes 'click' and then it's like, 'Fuck - get out of the way'... You'll be able to see the moshpit from space."

"The process starts simple. Serge gets a demo and then we build on it, and then he mutates it with rocket fuel and liquid nitrogen and it's crisp and it's crack and it's smack," says Meighan of the steps taken to make a Kasabian song. "It's a dangerous, dangerous, dangerous, dangerous drug we've created. I can't get my head around it. It's rock 'n' roll, it's got the rawness and it's edgy, but it's gone back to electronics and we've gone beyond leftfield." - Tom Meighan

As I said they are keeping it all very hush hush but they have released this sneaky little preview of Serge working his magic.

And for now here's a couple of Kasabian classics to keep you going.

Morning Phase - Beck - Looking forward to lunch ?

Life in general sees to it that we no longer wake up feeling anywhere near refreshed. Mostly we feel like we could do with another few hours kip. Maybe we can remember times though, times waking up slower than usual, that perfect start ? ... a warm breeze ? A sun reaching and lifting us out and into a day ?? ... Welcome to Becks Morning Phase.

Want to wake up like a rich-ster ? .... Im looking forward to lunch now.

Ones To Watch - Tastes Like Animals.

Tastes Like Animals have quickly become one of my favourite local bands. They came from the ashes of live favourites Elvis For Jay and with the help of producer Andrew Spence of Project 9 they established themselves as one of the most original bands around, and they make a lot of noise for a three piece!

They recently released their debut single Bare Naked Truth, a two and a half minute song that lets the listener know exactly what this band are about: big, blues inspired riffs and a healthy dose of cowbell! You can listen to it below.

I caught up with vocalist and guitarist Phil to talk about TLA, gear and who else the band are into.

Ste – Cheers for this Phil, where does the band name come from?
Phil - It came from a conversation I was having with my girlfriend Kat in ASDA believe it or not. She was buying veggie burgers and I asked if they’d be ok for her and she replied “They’ll be fine, they still taste like animals.” There was a moment as we looked at each other and knew it was an awesome band name!

Ste – How long has TLA been together for?
Phil - TLA has been together roughly 18 months. Me and John (drums) met in our previous band called Elvis For Jay and we met Matty (bass) through my girlfriend’s roller derby team!

Ste – Tell me a little bit about your debut single Bare Naked Truth.
Phil - Bare Naked Truth was the first full song the band played together. It was the first song that we said "That’s how we want to sound!" It was recorded at Project 9 Studios in Winnington by Andrew Spence who also produced it with us. It was recorded over a 6 month period, a few hours here on guitars, a few hours here on bass etc. We think that approach helped shape the song and production in the best it could possibly be. We gave ourselves no time limit. We’re really happy with the outcome and love that now everyone and anyone can hear our hard work on this debut track.

Ste – What do you have coming up this year? Any new releases or upcoming gigs?
Phil - We’re looking to release our second single around mid to late February. We have some top secret plans for that one too!
We’re playing Into The Void III on 22nd March at The Studio in Widnes and the Cabin in Liverpool on the 29th March.

Ste – Give us a brief overview of the equipment you play.
Phil - I play a Tokai Telecaster and a Westfield Telecaster through a VOX AC15. I use stomp boxes. Most of the time I’m using a BOSS DS-1 (Keeley Mod) for the distortion you hear on our songs but I run a MXR Micro Amp for boost and also a BOSS SD-1 (5 star stack mod) for boost/overdrive. I have these and a few others running through a BOSS line selector.
Matty plays a Status (Series 2) 5 string bass through a Yamaha BBT 500 head into a Marshall Cab. He runs a BOSS ME-50 multi effects board with a few extras like BOSS NS-2 and an EHX Bass Balls.
John’s kit is a Tama Swingstar with Paiste Alpha Rock cymbals. He is renowned for breaking sticks and has gone clean through metal, carbon etc. and but for some reason Vic Firths seem to be lasting him the longest! And they’re made of wood!

Ste – What's been your best gig so far?
Phil - So hard to choose! We’d probably have to go with our gig at Friars Court in Warrington. Best crowd, best sound guys, great venue and we played the best we’ve ever played! All round great night.

Ste – What other bands are you excited about at the minute?
Phil - A good hand full actually. Secateurs and Bluebottle Veins are incredible bands! And people we’re proud to call friends. There are also bands we’ve only seen once or twice like I Fight Lions, Jack Knife and The Fallows who are at the top of their game right now. Really exciting times on the local bands scene, lots of talent!

Ste – Anything else you want to mention?
Phil - Just want to mention that we wouldn’t be where we are now if it wasn’t for the kind people at Project 9 Studios, they’ve provided us with not only a warm, dry and friendly rehearsal space (free tea and coffee) but have been incredible with us when recording and when we’ve called in to one of the intimate acoustic shows they put on.

I suggest keeping a close eye on this band, go and see them if you get the chance and buy their music and merch! Check out the links below for more info and downloads.

Single Review: Flame On - Economy of Us.

Flame On are a new three piece (plus part-time bassist) from the North West who wear their bluesy influences on their sleeves. They've recently started gigging and have released their debut single Economy of Us this week.

After the first few bars you'd be forgiven for thinking that Economy of Us is a homage to Motown until the Franz Ferdinand-eqsue riff kicks in taking the track into a brand new direction. What stuck out for me straight away was the diversity of the drummer Ross. Before the vocals start he changes style three times, from the aforementioned Motown to heavy 16ths and finally settling on a syncopated rhythm which perfectly compliments the guitar and sounds like something the Gossip would be proud of. The whole thing is perfectly pulled together when Kristy's powerful vocals begin.

This is the sound of a confident band who have spent some time in the studio perfecting their sound. There are hints of Led Zep, Jack White and Alabama Shakes throughout, yet they still somehow manage to sound fresh and new. I predict some exciting things to come from this band. Don't Look Back to the Future

<<<<< BEHOLD THE FUTURE! >>>>>

Hoverboards, self-drying jackets, flying cars, re-hydrating food, self tieing shoes and at least 10 fax machines per house. This was the future according to Back to the Future part 2 released in 1989. 2015 in reality will prove to be nothing like the film, which is one of my faves. Instead it turns out that innovation has come on leaps and bounds in other ways.

Who would have thought back in 1985 that nearly everyone would be carrying phones around with us totally wireless and with them doing what they do, flat tvs, the internet and not to forget Google giving us loads of information (and not to forget silly cat videos).

Creative musical minds from the past envisioned robots, UFOS, alien visitors or maybe the earths destruction. Below are a few songs with a sci-fi futuristic theme starting from the late 60s to more recent ones. I’ve included top tunes from Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Blur, The Strokes and even a bit of Blondie. Enjoy.

My Favourite Albums Of 2013

Well, its now February of 2014, so this is just fashionably late.

Anyway, I'm not one usually for new music so my favourite albums of last year aren't from any particularly new artists, I'll only list a few though to prevent this getting way too long.

1. Motorhead - Aftershock
Personally, I'm a massive fan of Motorhead and this is their best album in decades in my opinion, going back to their blues roots in many respects, along with the traditional hard-hitting style that everyone knows them for. Standout tracks: Lost Woman Blues, Heartbreaker.

2. Seasick Steve - Hubcap Music

Seasick Steve never fails to disappoint with his simple yet aggressive blues sound and this album continues the trend. On Hubcap Music there a some typical Seasick Steve songs, and a couple of more soulful songs than we're used to but none disappoint. Standout tracks: Down on the farm, Coast Is Clear

3. Buddy Guy - Rhythm & Blues

Three years since his grammy award winning album and Buddy Guy delivers again with a 2-disc album featuring special guests such as Aerosmith and Kid Rock with some great songs showing that even at 76 Buddy rules the roost when it comes to playing the blues. Standout tracks: Too Damn Bad, Messin' With The Kid, Evil Twin

4. Valerie June - Pushin' Against A Stone

Now, anyone who knows me well will find this as a shock, as I have chosen an album by a relatively new artist, but I actually really enjoyed this. It has a sort of string blues/country/gospel/folk feel even with a touch of Amy Winehouse style in there, now this may be like musical marmite I actually quite liked it. Standout tracks: Workin' Woman Blues, The Hour

Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine - White People and the Damage Done

Jello continues his fine run of form with the GOSM with White People and the Damage Done, recapturing some of the Dead Kennedys-esque sound mixing Frankenchrist with Fresh Fruit into one ungodly mixture of sheer brilliance. Jello's writing has always been spot on and relevant and this is no different, politically, socially and environmentally motivated as ever Jello comes up with some of his best stuff for a long time. Standout tracks: The Brown Lipstick Parade, Mid East Peace Protest, Hollywood Goof Disease

So yeah, there you go, my top albums of 2013 (kinda late but ahh well), all opinion so I'm not saying these are the best overall, just what I enjoyed the most.
Also, I probably forgot a lot, but I tried to keep the list short and I've slept since 2013 so honestly I've forgot most of the stuff that has been released since last January.
